The "city of victory initially" or Vijayapura was the name given to the city. Alauddin Khilji took control of Vijayapura towards the close of the 13th century. Vijayapura had unheard-of architectural development during his reign.
Under the Adil Shahi dynasty, the "golden age" architectural and cultural renaissance continued to flourish. Under Aurangzeb's rule, Vijayapura was included into the Mughal Empire in 1686.
